Golden Door (California, United States)

Golden Door was originally designed in the style of a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn that welcomes weary travelers. Though modernized for today’s standard of comfort and luxury, the ryokan offers 40 private rooms conceived for serenity and comfort. Located just 40 miles north of San Diego, this all-inclusive destination spa offers 20 miles of private hiking trials and secluded grounds with Japanese-inspired architecture and courtyards.

When Deborah Szekely founded Golden Door in 1958, nothing like it existed anywhere in the U.S. With its focus on balancing mind, body, and spirit and unparalleled commitment to service, Golden Door paved the way for a new type of spa experience – one that married inner and outer transformation with luxury amenities. More than half a century later, Golden Door is still considered a pioneer among destination spa retreats thanks to its innovative approach to program development and vast connections with leading-edge experts in fitness, health, and eastern philosophy. Delight in fresh and healthy garden-to-table cuisine, challenge yourself with a custom-tailored vigorous fitness program, enjoy lavish personal service and the restorative power of rejuvenating body treatments in an intimate and relaxed setting.

A 2000-square-foot equipment gym. Two swimming pools and a Watsu water therapy pool. Three group exercise studios. A state-of- the-art Pilates Studio. A group spinning room. A Tennis court. Plus a hilltop retreat for private fitness sessions.

Included in every guest’s week-long program is a daily in-room massage, five skincare or body treatments and a manicure/pedicure, all designed to provide balance to the rigors of working out. With more than 20 miles of hiking trails that trace mountainsides or meander through meadows, there’s a natural path to fitness for every guest. And amidst a rigorous program of fitness and the indulgences of the spa, take time to train the mind and raise the consciousness. Meditation aims to focus on one’s own well-being, to develop compassion, love, patience, generosity and forgiveness…of one’s self and of the people who surround us. Through meditation comes acceptance, and through acceptance, contentment.

Activities include hiking & outdoor adventure, yoga and Pilates, cardio fitness, indoor cycling, and golf. You may also choose between programmes to Balance & posture, Strengthen & sculpt, and Weight loss.
